Our hotel is located on the waterfront of the historic city centre. Middelburg has that typical charm of small but special cities: there is more than enough to experience, yet nothing is far away.
Do you enjoy culture and history, for example? Then you’ll be pleased to visit the Abbey, dating back to the 8th century CE. The views from the top of the >90m high Lange Jan bell tower or the fine arts collection of the Zeeuws Museum might also please you. Cinema Middelburg is a gem, too. Located in the historic Kloveniersdoelen, its soft red chairs, vintage lamps and rustic ceiling beams offer a beautiful setting for a enjoying a good arthouse film.
Enjoying an afternoon of strolling around is just as easy in Middelburg. The city has lots of little boutiques, quaint shops and coffee houses. Langeviele, one of the main shopping streets, lies just around the corner from our hotel and takes you all the way to Markt (market square). Every Thursday, there’s a weekly market, with a lively orchestra of vendors’ voices and mouthwatering smells. (We highly recommend fresh ‘stroopwafels’ or caramel wafers!) Saturdays, the stalls with fruit, vegetables and flowers return.
Could you use some peace in the midst of this hustle and bustle? Then head to the Bolwerk (an extended, angular moat surrounding much of the city centre). Its trees and trails along the water’s edge is only a 2-minute walk away from the hotel. What’s more, Middelburg lies at the heart of the Walcheren peninsula. Walcheren might just be the most beautiful of all Zeeland peninsulas… Whether it’s summer or winter, whether you’re in the woods or on the beach: it’s easy to rediscover how simple and satisfying life can be.
